The Henry Raeburn Prize is presented in conjunction with the Greyfriars Edinburgh Art Fair as a tribute to Sir Henry Raeburn, Edinburgh’s renowned portrait painter and one of the most influential figures in Scottish art history. Celebrated for his mastery of character, light and composition, Raeburn’s legacy continues to shape Scotland’s artistic identity and stands as a lasting inspiration for contemporary creators.

In honour of his contribution to the arts, the award recognises outstanding artistic achievement and excellence among participating exhibitors. A dedicated panel of curators will review all eligible works presented at the fair and select four recipients whose practice reflects distinction, originality and a commitment to artistic quality.

The winners of the Henry Raeburn Art Award will be formally announced and honoured during a presentation ceremony on Saturday at 17:30 inside the historic setting of Greyfriars Kirk.

This award aims not only to celebrate exceptional talent but also to acknowledge the enduring influence of Raeburn’s work within the cultural landscape of Edinburgh.

This award is reserved exclusively for artists participating in the Greyfriars Edinburgh Art Fair; however, the Open Category is also available to non-exhibiting artists.

  • Sir Henry Raeburn (1756–1823) was one of Scotland’s most celebrated portrait painters and a defining figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. Born in Edinburgh, he became known for his remarkable ability to capture character and presence, producing iconic portraits of many of the era’s leading thinkers, writers and statesmen. After training in Italy, Raeburn returned to Edinburgh, where he worked for the rest of his life and established himself as the city’s foremost painter. His distinctive style, marked by bold brushwork and atmospheric lighting, secured him international recognition. In 1822 he was appointed Painter and Limner to the King in Scotland. Today, his work remains central to Scotland’s artistic heritage and can be found in major collections across the world.
