Sir Henry Raeburn (1756–1823) was one of Scotland’s most celebrated portrait painters and a defining figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. Born in Edinburgh, he became known for his remarkable ability to capture character and presence, producing iconic portraits of many of the era’s leading thinkers, writers and statesmen. After training in Italy, Raeburn returned to Edinburgh, where he worked for the rest of his life and established himself as the city’s foremost painter. His distinctive style, marked by bold brushwork and atmospheric lighting, secured him international recognition. In 1822 he was appointed Painter and Limner to the King in Scotland. Today, his work remains central to Scotland’s artistic heritage and can be found in major collections across the world.
